Location and history of the Don Juan Waterfalls
Don Juan Waterfalls are in Jujutla, a municipality in the department of Ahuachapán in El Salvador. Although it is far from the main transportation routes, this does not prevent locals and foreign tourists from visiting this tropical paradise.
It is only six and a half kilometers from the road that connects Apaneca and Ataco, crossing to the left. In just 10 minutes, approximately, you will have reached this magical place if you are traveling by private car.
Otherwise, you can use public transportation from several nearby areas. There is even a large parking lot for small cars and buses, providing greater comfort to visitors. In this place, you pay $2 per car and $2 for each person. This provides security both for the hike and for the place where we leave the vehicle or transportation.
This fluvial current is born in the San Juan River, feeding these beautiful natural waterfalls, from about 35mt high. However, being about 500 meters away from the source, the waterfalls retain the force that carries them and their warm temperature.
The space where the Don Juan waterfalls are is private land whose owners kindly share it with those who visit them. It also has a nearby restaurant that offers delicious quesadillas and other succulent dishes on weekends.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Tourism of El Salvador authorities has implemented security measures over the years to preserve flora and fauna of this natural area.
Some infrastructure works have been done to better the waterfalls’ pools. Walls that retain such waters increase the depth level.
